Interesting Facts About Plants
Although many of us keep plants in our homes, we often overlook some of the most interesting facts about plants that are right under our noses! Many of us are aware that plants benefit humans and animals by releasing oxygen into the environment, but they are capable of so much more, even on their most basic levels. The plant kingdom is truly one of the neatest and vast categories of life—one that many people take for granted. In honor of this wondrous kingdom, we are going to take a look at the following interesting facts about plants.
The Basic Constitution of a Plant
The basic makeup of a plant includes a root system, stem, and leaves. In some cases, plants produce fruit, seeds, and flowers. Unlike animals and humans, plants are not capable of going out to hunt for their food. In fact, they are completely incapable of changing their habitat because they cannot uproot themselves. Most plants are able to make their own food, which is essentially sugar, by a process called photosynthesis. During this process, plants use carbon dioxide, light energy, and water to produce carbohydrates. Some plants, such as fungi, cannot create their own food and must instead rely upon decomposing and absorbing organic materials and minerals from other plants.
How Plants Benefit the World
Humans and plants have a mutually beneficial relationship. Every time we breathe, it’s our body’s way of saying that the cells need oxygen. When we exhale, we are releasing the carbon dioxide that our body no longer needs. Plants work the opposite way—they need carbon dioxide in order to produce food, and in turn they release oxygen into the air. It is for this very reason that scientists began studying the effects of plants in the household environment. Studies have repeatedly shown that houseplants effectively help to fight back against indoor pollution simply because of the amount of oxygen they constantly churn out. They also absorb impressive amounts of harmful gasses through the natural process of photosynthesis.
Plants are also extremely beneficial to us because many of them produce the vegetables and fruit that we need in order to maintain a balanced and healthful diet. Could you imagine a life where carrots, potatoes, broccoli, and lettuce don’t exist? Or even apples, bananas, berries, and tomatoes? We definitely take most of these wonderful, fiber and antioxidant-rich foods for granted, even though a life without them would be filled with constipation, malnutrition, and a higher percentage of cancer.
Could you also imagine a world without cotton? Cotton comes from the cotton plant, which is a shrub that grows natively in the southern United States, India, and Africa. Soft tufts of cotton grow around the seeds of this plant. The cotton is collected and spun into yarn or thread which is then used to make clothing. Cotton clothing is considered to be the most “breathable” and suitable textile for all skin types, even sensitive skin.

Onions are mildly antibacterial and can help fight infections and even athlete’s foot. Over 95% of a cucumber fruit is made of water. The giant water lily, dubbed the fastest growing plant in the world, was rightfully named so because it grows at a pace of about a foot per day. Nutmeg is a lethal substance when injected via IV. Back in the nineteenth century, people believed the eggplant to be poisonous and referred to it as the mad apple. Some plants, such as the venus fly trap, digest insects while they are still alive.
